Psalm 17:4

Psalm 17:4 provides evidence of the psalmist's integrity. 'Concerning the works of men' sets the context: the psalmist lives in a world where other people do destructive things. 'By the word of thy lips' refers to God's word, His instruction and command, which the psalmist has kept central to his decision-making. Because of God's word, he has 'kept me from the paths of the destroyer'—he has deliberately stayed away from the ways of violence, fraud, or rebellion that would harm himself and others.

This verse shows that righteousness is not passive but active. The psalmist has not simply avoided temptation by accident; he has intentionally used God's word as his guide and protection. The phrase 'paths of the destroyer' suggests not just individual sins but patterns of behavior that lead to destruction—either one's own ruin or the harm of others. By grounding his avoidance of evil in the word of God, the psalmist reveals that his integrity is not self-generated but comes from listening to and following God's instruction. He has kept himself separate from those who walk in destructive ways.
