Many ask "Who will show us good?" but the psalmist requests the light of God's presence instead.

Context

A contrast between worldly and spiritual good, between what others pursue and what the psalmist values.

What Does Psalms 4:6 Mean?

"There be many that say, Who will shew us any good?" captures a widespread human cry—the search for prosperity, security, or happiness through earthly means. The psalmist recognizes this common pursuit but does not join it.

"LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us" redefines "good" as the visible favor and presence of God. The metaphor of lifted light suggests illumination, recognition, and warmth—the assurance that God sees and approves.

In the Original Language

paneycha (פָּנֶיךָ), 'thy countenance' — God's face; the expression of his presence and favor, the greatest good.
