What Does Revelation 17:11 Mean?
The angel returns to the beast as a figure in its own right. Though it springs from the seven and shares their nature, it is reckoned as an eighth, something that gathers up all that came before and yet stands apart. And like the kings, its road runs only one direction: it goes into perdition.
The repetition of that destiny is deliberate. However the beast multiplies itself, however many heads or kings it musters, the conclusion never changes. It belongs to a line that is already passing away, and it adds nothing but one more name to the list of the doomed. Against the Lamb who lives forever, the beast is a thing whose entire story can be told in advance, and its last word is ruin. The faithful need not fear what is already on its way to nothing.
