What Does Revelation 18:1 Mean?
After the vision of the harlot seated on the beast in chapter 17, John sees a fresh messenger arrive. This angel comes down from heaven carrying great power, and the brightness about him is so vast that the earth itself is lit by it. The scene shifts from the secret of the woman to the public announcement of her end.
Light pouring out from a heavenly messenger is a promise that God's verdict will not stay hidden. What seems dazzling and untouchable on earth will be exposed by a greater glory. For the believer this is hope: the darkness that holds the world in its grip is not the final word. Heaven's light is already on its way down, and before it every proud thing must give an account.
