What Does Revelation 2:1 Mean?
After the vision of the glorified Christ in chapter 1, He now speaks to each of seven churches in turn. Ephesus comes first, a great port city and a center of the faith. The titles He takes up here are drawn straight from the opening vision: the stars and lampstands stand for the churches and their messengers.
The Lord does not write from a distance. He holds the stars in His right hand and walks in the very midst of the lampstands, present and attentive among His people. Before a word of correction or praise is spoken, the church is reminded that its Lord knows it intimately and never leaves it. He upholds and watches over every congregation that bears His name.
