What Does Revelation 8:8 Mean?
The second angel sounds, and the judgment moves from land to sea. John sees what looks like a great mountain ablaze hurled into the waters, and a third of the sea becomes blood. The image again echoes Egypt, where the Nile was turned to blood at God's word.
John writes carefully: it was as it were a great mountain, language straining to describe a vision beyond ordinary sight. The sea, vast and seemingly untouchable, is not beyond God's reach. Yet once more the stroke falls upon a third, not all. The Creator who set the boundaries of the sea can also trouble its depths, and He does so with measure. These are warnings written across creation itself, calling the watching world to remember that the earth and its fullness belong to the Lord, and that He governs even the great deep.
