What Does Romans 15:17 Mean?
Reflecting on the ministry just described, Paul allows himself a note of holy boasting. He has cause to glory in what has been accomplished among the Gentiles.
But he hedges it carefully. His glorying is 'through Jesus Christ' and only 'in those things which pertain to God.' He does not boast in himself, his cleverness, or his success, but in what God has done through Christ by his hand. This is a sanctified pride, one that lifts the eyes upward rather than puffing the self. Paul has learned to rejoice in his labors without stealing the glory; every good thing he points back to its true author. To glory rightly is to glory in the Lord.
