What Does Romans 15:18 Mean?
Paul guards his boasting with strict honesty. He refuses to claim credit for anything Christ has not genuinely done through him; he will not pad his account with borrowed glory.
What he can point to is real: Christ working through him 'by word and deed' to bring the Gentiles to obedience. Notice that Christ is the actor and Paul the instrument — 'which Christ hath wrought by me.' The fruit of the mission belongs to the Lord. And the goal is named as obedience, the surrender of life to God that faith produces. Paul's integrity is bracing: he would rather say less and stay true than inflate his role. The work was Christ's, and he says only that.
