What Does Romans 3:2 Mean?
Answering his own question, Paul refuses to dismiss the covenant heritage. The advantage was "much every way," and the first he names is the greatest: the very words of God were placed into Israel's keeping, the Scriptures that pointed forward to the Messiah.
To be trusted with God's word is no small thing; it is a sacred stewardship. The promises, the law, the prophets all came through this people and were carried down the centuries to bless the world. The gift, though, carried responsibility. To hold the oracles of God is to be called to believe them and live by them, not merely to possess them.
