What Does Romans 5:17 Mean?
Paul closes his parenthesis with the climax of the contrast. Through one man's offence, death came to 'reign' -- to rule like a tyrant over all. That is the somber half of the comparison, the inheritance of Adam.
But the gospel half rises far higher. Those who 'receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness' will themselves 'reign in life' through Jesus Christ. Where once death ruled over humanity, now the redeemed are lifted to reign -- and they do so in life, not merely escaping death but sharing in triumph.
