What Does Zechariah 13:8 Mean?
After the Shepherd is struck and the sheep scattered, God speaks of a hard sifting over the whole land. Two parts are cut off and die; only a third is left. The language is solemn and unflinching, the picture of a people passing through severe judgment from which only a remnant survives.
Yet even here mercy hides inside the severity. God preserves a third, a surviving portion who will become the focus of the promise that follows. Throughout Scripture God keeps a remnant when all seems lost, a seed of life carried through the fire.
