What Does Zechariah 14:9 Mean?
This verse is the summit of the chapter and of the whole book: "the LORD shall be king over all the earth." The reign that was always true in heaven becomes openly acknowledged across the whole world. No corner remains outside his rule, no nation outside his kingship; the LORD is owned as king everywhere.
"In that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one" gathers up the ancient confession that the LORD is one (Deut. 6:4) and extends it to all peoples. Idols are gone; divided worship is ended; the one true God is worshiped with one name. This is the hope toward which all of Scripture leans, the day when every knee bows and the kingdom of the world becomes the kingdom of our Lord. The believer prays it even now: thy kingdom come.
