What Does Zechariah 7:13 Mean?
The verse states a sober principle of reciprocity. God had cried out to them through the prophets, and they would not hear; so when judgment fell and they cried out to Him, He withheld His answer. The pattern of their deafness was returned upon their own heads.
This is not the petulance of a slighted ruler but the moral logic of a relationship spurned. Persistent refusal of God's voice can harden into a silence we ourselves chose. Yet the very fact that He warns of it reveals His desire to be heard, and to hear. The door He describes as shut is one He longs for us to keep open.
