What Does Zechariah 7:6 Mean?
God extends the point from fasting to feasting. Whether they abstained or indulged, the people had been living for their own appetites. The pattern of self-reference ran through both their sorrow and their satisfaction.
Worship is not measured by what we give up or what we enjoy, but by whether God is at the center of either. A meal eaten in thanksgiving honors Him; a fast kept for show does not. The Lord calls His people past the mechanics of religion into a life lived unto Him, so that even bread and drink become an offering.
