God made the world, and everything He made was good - and that includes you.

Read together

Read Genesis 1 aloud before you begin — it takes about 3 minutes. These opening verses set it up:

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Talk about it

  1. If anything in your life feels a little like tohu wa-bohu right now - shapeless, dim, not yet settled - the very first act of God in the Bible is to hover over a place exactly like that. The Spirit doesn’t wait for the waters to calm. He is already moving, tender as an eagle over its young. Whatever part of your story still looks unformed is not outside His care; it is where He is most at home.
  2. Where in your life does something look like tohu wa-bohu - unformed, dark, not yet livable? What would change if you actually believed God's Spirit is already moving over it?
  3. Before God fills a life, He often draws a line first - this is for now, that is for later. This belongs here, that doesn’t. Genesis calls it a priestly act, the same word the Bible later uses for setting holy things apart from common things. Look back over your own life and you can almost always spot these moments: the day something finally got a clear name, the morning a real difference settled in, the week a new pocket of space opened up. Those lines were His. The one you’re sensing this week is probably His too.
  4. What is the first line God may be asking you to draw this week - work hours from family hours, scrolling from presence, noise from silence? Name it.
  5. Where is God making room in your life right now? What do you sense He is making room for?
  6. Your spreadsheet, your sermon, your painting, your business, the meal you cooked tonight, the homework you helped with - none of these compete with God. They are echoes of day three: the ground bringing forth what He first planted in it. Ordinary work, done with a seed He gave you, is spiritual. Whatever small good thing came out of you today was already the earth obeying Him.

Where it points to Christ

John opens his Gospel with the same three words Genesis opens with: In the beginning. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... All things were made by him” (John 1:1, 3). Every time you read “And God said” in this chapter, John is telling you the one doing the speaking is Jesus. The Spirit of God is already hovering over the waters in verse 2. From Genesis 1:1, the God who creates is never working alone.
