Duccio di Buoninsegna was the founder of the Sienese school and author of the Maestà (1308–1311), the altarpiece of Siena Cathedral. Its central Madonna in Majesty and roughly fifty small narrative panels — Infancy, Ministry, Passion, Resurrection appearances, and Life of the Virgin — form one of the most complete visual gospels of the Middle Ages.
