The Mother of God of the Don
Mary holds the Christ child close, cheek to cheek, in the tender icon known as the Mother of God of the Don, recalling the days she kept and pondered all these things in her heart (Luke 2). A tempera icon by the Byzantine iconographer Theophanes the Greek.

Depicted passages
Theophanes the Greek was a Byzantine-trained icon painter and muralist who worked in Constantinople, Novgorod, and Moscow. Among his surviving works are the frescoes at the Church of the Transfiguration on Ilyin Street (Novgorod, 1378) and icons of the Deësis tier at the Annunciation Cathedral in Moscow.
