John the Forerunner
John the Baptist is shown as the forerunner who confesses he is not the Christ but the voice crying in the wilderness, preparing the way of the Lord (John 1). A tempera icon by the Byzantine iconographer Theophanes the Greek.

Depicted passages
Theophanes the Greek was a Byzantine-trained icon painter and muralist who worked in Constantinople, Novgorod, and Moscow. Among his surviving works are the frescoes at the Church of the Transfiguration on Ilyin Street (Novgorod, 1378) and icons of the Deësis tier at the Annunciation Cathedral in Moscow.
