Jesus Bearing the Cross

Stripped of the scarlet robe and dressed again in his own garments, Jesus is led out bearing the cross toward the place of crucifixion (Matthew 27). A watercolor by the French painter James Tissot, from his life of Christ.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
