The Fire of Atonement (Aaron's Inaugural Sacrifice)

At the inauguration of the priesthood, fire comes out from before the Lord and consumes the offering on the altar as the people fall on their faces (Leviticus 9). A gouache study by the French painter James Tissot.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
