The Flight of the Prisoners

After the fall of Jerusalem the survivors are driven from their ruined city in a long line of captives, carried into exile in Babylon by the armies of Nebuchadnezzar (Jeremiah 52). A gouache study by the French painter James Tissot.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
