Jephthah's Daughter
Jephthah's only daughter comes out to meet him with timbrels and dancing, unaware of the rash vow that now binds her father in grief (Judges 11). A gouache by the French painter James Tissot.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
