Pilate declares he finds no fault in Jesus and offers to release him, but the crowd cries out instead for Barabbas (John 18). A watercolor by the French painter James Tissot, from his life of Christ.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
