Moses Smites the Rock in the Desert
In the wilderness of Zin, with the people crying out for water, Moses strikes the rock twice and a stream pours forth for the congregation and their cattle (Numbers 20). A gouache by the French painter James Tissot.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
