Having come to Bethlehem to be registered, Joseph searches the crowded town for shelter for Mary, who is expecting her child, but finds no room (Luke 2). A watercolor by the French painter James Tissot, from his life of Christ.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
