Led by the Spirit into the wilderness and fasting forty days, Jesus is tempted by the devil to turn stones to bread and to seize the kingdoms of the world (Matthew 4). A watercolor by the French painter James Tissot, from his life of Christ.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
