The Foolish Virgins
Having let their lamps run dry, the foolish virgins are shut out of the wedding feast and plead at the closed door, but the bridegroom does not open (Matthew 25). A watercolor by the French painter James Tissot, from his life of Christ.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
