The Wise Virgins

In the parable of the ten virgins, the wise ones keep oil ready in their lamps and are welcomed in to the wedding feast when the bridegroom comes (Matthew 25). A watercolor by the French painter James Tissot, from his life of Christ.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
