Painted from the vantage of the cross itself, the scene looks down on the crowd at Golgotha — soldiers, mourners, and his mother — gathered before the crucified Christ (Matthew 27). A watercolor by the French painter James Tissot, from his life of Christ.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
