Psalm 23 closes here with a confident summary of the shepherded life. This final verse looks both to God's faithful care through all of life and to dwelling with Him forever.
What Does Psalm 23:6 Mean?
Psalm 23:6 brings the beloved shepherd psalm to a triumphant close, declaring that goodness and mercy will follow all our days and that we will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. After provision, guidance, comfort, and abundance, the psalm ends with confidence about both this life and the life to come.
The word "Surely" expresses settled certainty -- David is sure of what he says. "Goodness and mercy shall follow me" pictures these two blessings as companions pursuing him all his life. The word translated "mercy" is the rich Hebrew term for God's steadfast, covenant love, His loyal kindness that never fails. So God's goodness and faithful love trail the believer like a faithful escort "all the days of my life," through every season, good and hard alike. Then the psalm lifts its gaze beyond this life: "I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever." To dwell in God's house is to live in His presence, enjoying intimate fellowship with Him. The phrase "for ever" reaches past the boundary of this life into endless nearness to God. The psalm that began with the LORD as shepherd ends with the believer at home with God forever. This is the destination of the shepherded life: not merely safe passage through the valley, but an eternal dwelling in the presence of the One who has cared for us all along.
In the Original Language
The word chesed, here "mercy," is the rich term for God's steadfast covenant love; the verb yirdefuni, "shall follow," actually means to pursue, picturing God's goodness chasing after the believer.
