Context

Psalm 24 is a psalm of worship celebrating God as King and Creator. This opening verse establishes His complete ownership of the earth and all who live in it.

What Does Psalm 24:1 Mean?

Psalm 24:1 makes a sweeping declaration of God's ownership: the earth and everything that fills it, the whole world and all who live in it, belong to the LORD. This verse opens a psalm of worship with a foundational truth about who God is and what is His.

The claim is total. "The earth is the LORD's" -- the planet itself, the ground beneath our feet, belongs to God. "And the fulness thereof" extends the claim to everything that fills the earth: its resources, its creatures, its riches, all of it. Then "the world, and they that dwell therein" includes every person living anywhere. Nothing and no one falls outside God's ownership. This is grounded in the next verse, which points to God as Creator -- because He made it, it is His. This truth carries deep implications. If everything belongs to God, then we are stewards rather than absolute owners of what we possess. Our money, our possessions, even our own lives are held in trust from the One to whom they truly belong. It also means no part of the world is outside God's authority and care; every nation and every person belongs to Him. The verse calls us to humility and gratitude, recognizing that we receive everything as a gift from the rightful owner of all things, and to live accordingly as those entrusted with what is ultimately His.

In the Original Language

The word melo'ah, "the fulness thereof," means that which fills it -- all the contents, abundance, and inhabitants of the earth that belong to the LORD.

Application

Hold your possessions, your resources, and your life with open hands as a steward rather than an absolute owner, recognizing that everything you have belongs ultimately to God and comes to you as His gift.
