First Lutheran Church

About this church

First Lutheran Church in El Cajon, formally First Evangelical Lutheran Church, is a congregation of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. Divine Service is held each Sunday at 8:30 a.m. with organ music and at 11 a.m. with contemporary music; both follow the historic liturgy and last about an hour. The congregation sings, prays and responds together, and the order of service is printed in the bulletin so newcomers can follow along. The church practices close communion, so guests who are not LCMS members are invited to come forward for a blessing or to talk with the pastor. Clothing ranges from casual to formal.

Between the services, at 9:45 a.m., adults meet for Bible study while children attend Sunday school. Children are also welcome in the worship service itself, and families may find it easier to sit near the front. Weekly groups include a women's Bible study on Monday evenings, a college group on Tuesday evenings, and a men's Bible study on Saturday mornings, along with a monthly men's breakfast and regular gatherings for women. First Lutheran Preschool operates on the campus and has its own phone line. Parking is available in front of and behind the sanctuary, with a few spaces reserved for first- and second-time visitors plus accessible parking. Sermons are posted online and a monthly newsletter lists events; confirm times on the website.
