St Matthew Lutheran Church

About this church

St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, also known through its site as Lihue Lutheran Church, worships at 4602 Hoomana Road in Lihue on Sunday at 9:00 a.m., with a Facebook Live option. Adult education meets after worship on the second Sunday of the month and uses Luther’s Small Catechism. Youth group is published every other Sunday from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Because island weather can lead to closures, the church posts cancellations and encourages checking current notices before traveling.

The congregation began among German immigrant families in June 1881 and formally organized in 1883, making it the oldest Lutheran congregation in Hawaii according to its history. The present church recalls the 1885 building that Hurricane Iwa destroyed in 1982 and incorporates ship-like architectural details. Current ministries include Centering Prayer, Dorcas service work, youth activities, and Mobile Munchies food outreach. That mix of historic local identity, Lutheran catechesis, worship, and practical service gives visitors several reasons to explore beyond the Sunday hour. Consult the events page for the exact youth rotation and seasonal programs.
