Greater Norris Chapel Baptist Church

About this church

Greater Norris Chapel Baptist Church holds Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. and morning worship at 10:30. The Henderson congregation summarizes its rhythm as entering the building to worship and departing to serve. Christian education and community service are central to its public identity, alongside confidence in Scripture, outreach, and neighborhood revitalization. A prayer-request page and sermon library provide direct routes into pastoral support and teaching, though the online material offers limited detail about the actual Sunday order.

The church traces its roots to an African Baptist congregation organized in 1840 in the basement of a white First Baptist Church, during an era when Black residents had previously worshiped in fields and secluded places. After the Civil War severed that shared arrangement, members faced displacement, organized new worship space, and eventually formed Fourth Street Baptist Church. When its building burned in 1884, worship continued by candlelight in Turner’s Woods and then in homes. The ground where Greater Norris Chapel now stands was later purchased for $80; sanctuary renovations began in 2018 and exterior work followed in 2020. Public pages do not explain worship duration, music and preaching, Communion or baptism, children and nursery care, screening, dress, parking, accessibility, hearing support, livestreaming, or the content of Sunday School.
