Shoreham Chapel

About this church

Shoreham Chapel, also known as Hattie Goodman Chapel, is a seasonal Christian landmark near Lakes Melissa and Sallie outside Detroit Lakes. Frederick Goodman completed the chapel in 1902 in memory of his wife Hattie, who had taught summer Sunday School to local children and begun raising funds for a permanent building. Over time, ministers and theology students from different backgrounds shared pastoral duties. Its old Northern Pacific Railroad bell, purchased in 1928, still rings before worship, tying the present summer congregation to lake residents who once arrived by train, boat, horse, and foot.

Worship begins Sunday at 10:45 a.m., but only during an eleven-Sunday season running from roughly mid-June through the end of August. The bell rings first at 10:00 and again at 10:45 to mark the service. This is not a year-round weekly church schedule; a traveler arriving in fall, winter, or spring should not expect the chapel to be open for Sunday worship. The website credits retired chaplain Tim Cook with leading services since 2007, following decades of summer ministry by Gary Danielson. Because the season ends near the close of August, late-summer visitors should check the current worship schedule for that year's final Sunday before driving to North Melissa Drive.
