What is eternal life?

When we hear the words "eternal life," our minds reach first for length, for a life that goes on and on and never stops. That is gloriously true, but Jesus draws our eyes to something deeper still. On the night before He died, He lifted His eyes to heaven and prayed, "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (John 17:3). Eternal life, then, is not first a measure of time but a manner of living. It is to know God, to walk with Him, to share in His own deathless life. Before it is a length of days, it is a relationship with the One who made us, the kind of life that belongs to the world to come and yet breaks into ours even now.

This is why Jesus could speak of eternal life as something we may possess in the present tense, not merely inherit at the end of the road. "He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life" (John 5:24). Notice the words: he "hath" it; he "is passed" from death to life already. For the one who trusts in Christ, eternal life is not only a distant reward waiting beyond the grave but a present gift, a spring that begins to flow the moment we are joined to the Savior. We do not have to wait until we die in order to begin living; the truest life starts now.

What kind of life is this? It is life as God always meant it to be, abundant and whole, no longer held under the shadow of death. Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). It is a life of fellowship restored, of guilt washed away, of a heart awakened to love what it once ignored. Eternal life is not simply this present existence stretched out forever; that alone would be no great gift. It is a new quality of life altogether, the very life of God shared with His children, in which we are gradually changed into the likeness of the One we love and behold (1 John 3:2).

Yet this priceless gift cannot be bought, earned, or achieved by our own striving. Scripture is tender and clear on this point: "the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23). A wage is something we work for and are owed; a gift is something freely given to those who could never repay it. Eternal life comes to us not as the prize for a flawless record but as the open hand of a generous God, held out to us in His Son. "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life" (1 John 5:11-12). The life is in the Son. To have Him is to have it, for the gift and the Giver cannot be separated.

How then do we receive what we cannot earn? We receive it the way a thirsty person receives water, simply by coming and drinking. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). We come to Christ in faith, turning from the old way of living and trusting Him with everything we are. And the faith that lays hold of eternal life is never a dead or idle thing; it is a living trust that takes root and bears fruit. The same grace that gives us this new life also begins to remake us, so that the life we now live increasingly reflects the One who gave it. To be alive in Christ is to love what He loves, to walk where He walks, to be drawn ever deeper into fellowship with Him.

So if your heart longs for a life that death cannot touch, hear the invitation gently held out to you. You are not asked to climb up to God by your own strength, nor to make yourself worthy first. You are asked only to come to the One who crossed every distance to reach you, and to receive from His hand the life He purchased with His own. This life begins the moment you trust Him, and it will not end when your days on earth are done. It opens at last into a new creation, where God Himself "shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying" (Revelation 21:4). That is eternal life: to know God, to be loved by Him, and to dwell with Him forever, beginning today.
