1 Chronicles 1:28 Meaning and Explanation

The writer names Abraham's two sons, Isaac and Ishmael, placing the son of promise first though he was born second. Isaac is the heir of the covenant, while Ishmael, the firstborn, becomes a great people in his own right. Both are sons of Abraham, and both will be accounted for.

God's choosing of Isaac does not mean the forgetting of Ishmael, whose descendants the next verses will faithfully record. The Lord narrows His covenant line while still caring for those outside it. In this we see the shape of grace: a chosen people through whom blessing is meant to reach all the rest.
