1 Chronicles 2:12 Meaning and Explanation

From Boaz the line runs to Obed and then to Jesse. The book of Ruth ends on this very note, naming Obed as the son born to Boaz and Ruth and the grandfather of David. The chronicler now brings the reader to the threshold of the king the whole record has been moving toward.

Jesse of Bethlehem would become a household name, for from his sons God would choose a shepherd to be king. Centuries later the prophets would speak of a shoot from the stem of Jesse, a branch out of his roots. The naming of Jesse here is a quiet promise that the line is almost ready to bear its greatest fruit, and beyond David, the Anointed One Himself.
