What Does 1 John 1:9 Mean?
In one sentence: when we honestly admit our sins to God, He reliably forgives and cleanses us. "Confess" means to agree with God about our sin rather than hide or excuse it.
Forgiveness rests on God being "faithful and just" -- not on the size of our sorrow. It is just because Christ has already paid for sin, so God forgives without compromising His righteousness. The result is two-fold: forgiveness (the record cleared) and cleansing (the heart renewed).

The Greek "homologeo" (confess) means "to say the same thing," agreeing with God about our sin. "Katharizo" means to cleanse or purify.
