Immediately after describing a person who withholds help from a needy brother, John presses his readers to make sure their love is shown in concrete, sincere action.
What Does 1 John 3:18 Mean?
John urges believers to make love real -- not just spoken but lived out in action and sincerity. He sets two pairs against each other: "word" and "tongue" on one side, "deed" and "truth" on the other. Love that stays in words is cheap; the love John calls for shows up in genuine acts done with integrity. The affectionate address "my little children" signals pastoral tenderness, not scolding -- he wants their love to be whole. This verse follows directly from the previous one, where John pictured someone who sees a brother in need but shuts off compassion; saying caring words while withholding help is exactly the empty love he rejects. "In deed" means love that does something concrete, and "in truth" means love that is honest and real rather than pretended. Together they describe love that costs and acts. John is not dismissing kind words but insisting they be backed by action that proves them true. Authentic love is verified by what we do for others, especially those in need, not merely by what we say.
In the Original Language
The contrast is between logos/glossa ("word/tongue") and ergon/aletheia ("deed/truth"), urging love that is enacted and genuine rather than merely spoken.
