What Does 1 John 3:21 Mean?
John names the glad opposite. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, then we have confidence toward God. A clear conscience opens the way to bold fellowship with Him.
When love rules and the conscience is at rest, we may draw near to God without dread. This confidence is the fruit of a life increasingly shaped by His love. It is not arrogance but the freedom of a child secure with a loving Father. John wants his readers to enjoy this nearness, the assurance that lets us come to God openly, trusting in His welcome and unafraid in His presence.
In the Original Language
parresia (παρρησία), 'confidence' -- bold freedom of speech and approach, here our access to God with an untroubled heart.
