What Does 1 Kings 13:18 Mean?
The old prophet plays his strongest card: he claims equal standing ('a prophet also as thou art') and reports a fresh revelation by an angel that reverses the man of God's orders. Then comes the narrator's stark verdict: 'But he lied unto him.'
A newer message, however impressively delivered, cannot overturn what God has clearly already spoken. The man of God knew his own charge; he had no warrant to set it aside on another's say-so. When a claimed word from heaven contradicts the word we have already been given, faithfulness means holding to what we know God said, and testing every new voice against it.
