Elijah commands the widow to give him her last meal first, before feeding herself and her son.

What Does 1 Kings 17:13 Mean?

This is the test. The widow has confessed her poverty, named her coming death, and Elijah's response is to ask her to give what little she has to him first. 'Make me a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.' Not 'give me half,' but make his cake before hers. By human standards, it is cruelty masquerading as prophecy. He is asking a starving woman to let him eat while her son watches. 'Fear not' - he begins with the same words the Lord used with him. Whatever Elijah is about to do, he anchors it in faith.

Yet notice: Elijah does not ask her to give what she has and then disappear. He asks her to cook, to act, to do the impossible - to make a cake when there is barely flour, as though there were plenty. And he promises, though not yet stated, that there is more to come. This is the economy of the kingdom of God: we give first, we trust first, and then the multiplication comes. The widow is being asked to participate in faith, not as a spectator waiting for provision to appear in her barrel, but as a co-worker with Elijah and with the Lord. She must step into trust with both feet - not inching forward, but walking.

Application

When God asks us to give from our scarcity before we are assured of the outcome, do we step into faith fully, or do we hesitate and hold back?
