God's hand empowers Elijah, and he runs before Ahab's chariot all the way to Jezreel.

Context

This remarkable feat demonstrates the supernatural strength that comes upon Elijah. He runs ahead of the chariot in the rain, outdistancing a horse-drawn vehicle, showing forth the power of the LORD that rests upon His prophet.

What Does 1 Kings 18:46 Mean?

And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah. The phrase describes not a gentle touch but a sovereign empowerment, a grasping, a taking hold. Elijah girds his loins, gathering his garments so he can move freely, and begins to run. Not walk, run. Ahead of Ahab's chariot, through the rain, across the slick roads from Mount Carmel down to Jezreel. In the strength of God, Elijah covers ground that in normal human terms should be impossible.

This is the final sign of the day: not only does God send fire and rain, but He gives His prophet strength to outrun a chariot. Elijah arrives at the gates of Jezreel ahead of the king himself, a physical embodiment of the truth that the word of the LORD will outlast all earthly power. The prophet who began the day alone against 450 priests of Baal ends it by running before kings, the hand of the LORD upon him, unstoppable and visible.

Application

When God's hand is upon us, we are enabled to do more than our natural strength allows. We run when we should walk, we endure when we should falter, and we arrive where we are called to be in the strength that God supplies.
