1 Kings 19:18 Meaning and Explanation

God gives the gentle, decisive correction to Elijah's despair: He has kept for Himself seven thousand in Israel who have never bowed to Baal nor kissed his image. Elijah is not the last after all. Unseen by the prophet, God has been preserving a faithful people through the darkest years of idolatry.

Here is one of Scripture's great comforts. When we feel ourselves alone in faith, God always has His hidden seven thousand, a remnant kept by His own hand. The apostle Paul would later draw on this very verse to teach that grace always preserves a people for God. We are never the sole survivors of faithfulness; the Lord is quietly keeping more hearts than we will ever know.
