The angel returns to awaken and feed Elijah a second time, preparing him for the long journey to Mount Horeb.

Context

The second ministration suggests Elijah slept again after eating. The angel's explanation ('the journey is too great') hints that Elijah's next steps matter, though he does not yet know it.

What Does 1 Kings 19:7 Mean?

Elijah sleeps again, and again the angel comes. Again the touch. Again the command: Arise and eat. This time the angel adds something: 'Because the journey is too great for thee.' The angel speaks of a journey Elijah has not yet chosen, in a direction he has not yet turned. The angel knows what Elijah does not yet grasp: that Elijah will walk from this wilderness to Mount Horeb, the mountain where Moses met God, where God gave the Law. That journey is forty days' journey. Elijah is being prepared for it, strengthened for it, though he himself does not yet know he is meant to undertake it.

This is the shape of God's guidance: He prepares us for journeys we have not yet chosen. He strengthens us for paths we cannot yet see. The angel does not argue with Elijah's despair or force him forward. But he nourishes him with a mysterious knowledge of what is to come, as if to say: there is something ahead that will matter. You will need strength for it. Trust me.

Application

God sometimes strengthens us for callings we do not yet recognize. When we feel called to something larger than we can see, we may find that we are already being prepared. The journey ahead requires its own provision.
