Jehoshaphat establishes a peace treaty or alliance with the king of Israel.

Context

After the battle against Syria in which Ahab died, Jehoshaphat now makes peace with Ahaziah, Ahab's son and the new king of Israel. This alliance between the two kingdoms is both political necessity and a sign of Jehoshaphat's pragmatism.

What Does 1 Kings 22:44 Mean?

Peace is made between Judah and Israel. In the ancient world, when two kingdoms that have stood apart find accord, it is a matter of note. Jehoshaphat reaches across the lines that have long divided the two peoples, the split kingdom of Solomon's house, and extends the hand of peace to the new king in the north. This is an act of statecraft, a recognition that the covenant people, though divided, share a common threat.

Yet we must also note what this peace requires: fellowship with a king who has inherited the rebellion of his father. Jehoshaphat's faithfulness to God does not extend to complete separation from those who do not share his heart. He balances the prophetic calling toward righteousness with the political necessity of alliance. This balance is delicate and will, in later chapters, lead him into compromises that Scripture will rebuke.

Application

We are called to seek peace where we can, to build bridges between divided people. Yet let us be careful that the peace we make does not compromise our fidelity to God. Work for harmony without giving away the truth that sustains you.
