Context
Jehoshaphat's piety emerges here. Having pledged his support, he now insists that before the armies march, they should seek the word of the Lord. This is his safeguard, his way of recovering from his earlier misstep. The word 'enquire' (Hebrew darash) means to seek, to ask, to require.
What Does 1 Kings 22:5 Mean?
It is a small mercy that Jehoshaphat paused. After speaking his hasty alliance, something in him recognized that this commitment, however appealing, needed God's approval. He asked the king of Israel to enquire of the Lord. We do not know what stirred him to make this request, but it reflects a piety that Ahab did not share. For Jehoshaphat, the word of the Lord was the final authority, more binding than treaties or alliances.
We too can recover from hasty commitments and poor decisions. Jehoshaphat's correction is not a full reversal, but it is an opening toward truth. He creates a space where God's word can be heard. Sometimes the wisdom of following God is not in never stumbling, but in being willing to ask, to seek, to pause and listen even after we have already started moving in the wrong direction. The Lord honors the heart that returns to Him, even partially.
Application
If you have already committed to something that troubles your spirit, it is not too late to ask God about it. Being willing to seek His word, even after initial agreement, is a sign of returning to your true allegiance.
