1 Kings 22:6

Context
Ahab has gathered approximately four hundred prophets, likely court prophets attached to his household and supported by his treasury. These were functionaries of the kingdom, dependent on royal favor. The unanimity of their answer is suspiciously perfect, a detail that alerts the reader to look deeper.
What Does 1 Kings 22:6 Mean?
Four hundred voices crying 'Go up, go up!' Must it not be the voice of the Lord? So it seems, and so Ahab was pleased to hear it. Yet we see here the danger of surrounding ourselves only with those who agree with us. These prophets were not independent seekers of truth, but men whose livelihoods depended on the king's approval. When a king asks a question designed to confirm what he already wishes to do, surrounded by subordinates who understand the cost of contradiction, the voice that comes back is not the voice of God but an echo of the king's own desire.
This pattern repeats in every age and in every human heart. We gather voices that affirm what we already want to do. We listen to the counsel of those whose interests align with ours. We surround ourselves with people who tell us we are wise and just, and we mistake their agreement for the confirmation of heaven. Yet God's word often comes through unexpected channels, through voices we do not wish to hear, through the lonely prophet rather than the crowd.
Application
Do you have people in your life who will tell you hard truths, or only people who affirm you? Seek voices that challenge you lovingly, and be wary of the seductive comfort of universal agreement.
