God grants Solomon's request, giving him wisdom unmatched by any before or after him.

What Does 1 Kings 3:12 Mean?

God says yes, and more than yes. He grants Solomon "a wise and an understanding heart" of such measure that none before or after will equal it. The gift is immediate and superlative. The young king who called himself a little child now receives the very thing he confessed he lacked, pressed down and overflowing.

God gives generously to those who ask according to His heart. Wisdom is not wrung from God but given freely — and James echoes this exact promise, that God gives wisdom liberally to all who ask (James 1:5). Solomon's unrivaled wisdom would point Israel toward a greater Son of David, in whom one greater than Solomon is here (Matthew 12:42). The Giver still delights to answer such prayers.
